Homeowners can benefit from a federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. This credit lets them claim a tax credit every year they make qualifying upgrades.
This includes things like insulation, energy-efficient windows and doors, heat pumps, and certain HVAC improvements.
Overview of Deduction
This credit is for qualified energy-saving upgrades in your primary home. Examples include:
- Energy-efficient insulation
- Exterior doors and energy-efficient windows
- Central air conditioners
- High-efficiency heat pumps and HVAC systems
- Advanced main air circulating fans
- Natural gas, propane, or oil water heaters
- Natural gas, propane, or oil furnaces and hot water boilers
- Electric water heaters
- Electric heat pumps
The maximum credit you can claim each year is:
- $1,200 for energy efficient property costs and certain energy efficient home improvements, with limits on exterior doors ($250 per door and $500 total), exterior windows and skylights ($600) and home energy audits ($150)
- $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps, water heaters, biomass stoves or biomass boilers
This credit was only available for energy-efficient improvements to your home through December 31, 2025. There has not been any extension of this credit as of yet for future years.
